Stroke Pathophysiology and Reactive Oxygen Species

Abstract

In this chapter we aim to describe general characteristics of stroke and reactive oxygen species (ROS). First, we describe the epidemiology and pathophysiology of stroke. Secondly, we focus on ROS production, antioxidant mechanisms, and functions of ROS. Thirdly, we discuss oxidative stress and stroke. We describe sources of ROS in stroke and consequences of oxidative stress, and finally we summarize some diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of antioxidants.
