Matrix formation and osteoid maturation in vitamin D-deficient rats made normocalcemic by dietary means

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Our previous studies in rats with vitamin D deficiency accompanied by hypocalcemia showed a decrease in the rates of periosteal matrix formation and osteoid maturation compared to control values. We report here that a dietary correction of the hypocalcemia also corrects the defects in matrix formation and osteoid maturation in vitamin D-deficient animals. These results suggest that the level of serum calcium plays a regulatory role in determining the rates of both bone matrix formation and maturation in rats.
