The stimulating cooperation with Dr. B. Grosswendt, PTB-Germany, Dr. P. Colautti, INFN-Lengaro and Dr. J. Ward, UCSD-USA, is greatly acknowledged. The work was partly supported by a US National Medical Technology Testbed Grant No DAMID 17-97-7016. S. S. is supported by the state of Israel, the Ministry of Absorption and the Center for Absorption of Scientists. A. B. is the W. P. Reuther Professor of Research in the peaceful uses of Atomic Energy.

N2 - A novel nanodosimeter is described, based on ion counting. It provides precise model-evaluation of radiation-induced ionization patterns in small condensed-matter volumes of nanometric size. The nanodosimeter consists of a millimetric, low-pressure, wall-less gas cell, serving as an expanded model of a nanometric condensed-matter volume. The method can also be employed for the assessment of radiation damage to advanced nanoelectronics.
